      Strength of the Current Evidence About Caries Prevention and Treatment  
      Dr. James Bader, DPBRN Consultant, will discuss how strong the current evidence in the literature is regarding caries diagnosis (dental explorer usage, DiagnoDent, air drying, magnification), prevention (fluoride usage), and treatment (when to intervene surgically on proximal lesions).

      The Facilitators for the breakout sessions will present their findings. Each of the 16 breakout session groups has one Facilitator. One Facilitator will present on behalf of a group of four Facilitators, for a total of four presentations during this time slot. After these reports, there will be an audience discussion and question and answer session.

      Levels of Evidence and the Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT)
Dr. Dale Williams, Principal Investigator of the DPBRN Coordinating Center, and
Dr. Martha Wallace, DPBRN Executive Committee Member and DPBRN Practitioner-investigator, Birmingham, Alabama.

Dr. Williams is a biostatistician who has been involved with many RCTs. Dr. Wallace directed an RCT in the early part of her career when she was a faculty member at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, and will provide a practitioner-investigator's perspective on RCTs. They will discuss the fact that study design typically determines the scientific strength of a study, including one study design: the RCT. The NIDCR PBRN Monitoring Committee has requested that DPBRN begin doing RCTs.

      Dr. Vibeke Qvist, Principal Investigator of an RCT called "SEAL-DPBRN" that is being considered by the DPBRN Executive Committee. She will discuss this possible study and the realities of doing RCTs in busy clinical practices.

Dr. Pihlstrom will discuss ideas about how DPBRN should demonstrate that all our efforts are actually making a difference in clinical practice and the population's oral health.
